My Journey into Open Knowledge
A Wikipedia edit-a-thon at my high school in Dhaka, Bangladesh got me started on a journey into free and open knowledge where my volunteer contributions have led to being certified as a Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom trainer, leader of Project Korikath, and even attending Wikimania Singapore in 2023.
I’m Mrb Rafi, an activist for Wikimedia and the open knowledge movement. When I initially began volunteering within the open knowledge ecosystem, I wasn’t fully aware of the the underlying philosophy of open source. My motivation stemmed purely from enjoyment; I enjoyed connecting with others and expanding my knowledge through these interactions. This involvement significantly transformed my perspective on copyright and open source. It opened my eyes to the immense societal impact that can be achieved through the simple concept of making knowledge openly accessible to all. I never anticipated that a seemingly minor change, such as adopting open licenses for learning materials, could have such a deep and positive effect on enhancing knowledge accessibility and localization.
Joining the Open Learning Collective
The Open Learning Collective (OLC) is an organization that empowers companies and organizations to amplify the impact of their education programs by leveraging open educational resources (OERs). OLC prioritizes fostering a collaborative community, it works to ensure that transformative learning opportunities are accessible to everyone, regardless of background. Their mission deeply resonated with my own goals, making the decision to pursue a fellowship with OLC an easy one.
The Power of Open and Transformative Education
While traditional education can be valuable, it may not always provide the open and adaptable approach needed to achieve its full potential. Traditional educational resources can sometimes fall short of addressing the fundamental goals of education, particularly when it comes to fostering accessibility and impact. Open and transformative education offers a compelling solution by making learning experiences more inclusive and effective.
A New Perspective on Corporate Social Responsibility
My initial perception of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) was that it held a limited role within businesses. I viewed it primarily as a philanthropic activity with minimal benefit to the company itself. My experience with OLC over the past few months has completely transformed my perspective on CSR. Now I understand how well-designed CSR initiatives can not only create significant social impact but also build stronger value within the community for a brand.
Developing Skills and Strategies
Through my work at OLC, I had to go through the virtual profiles of numerous CSR professionals. This insightful exploration allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of their roles and the contexts within which they operate. Witnessing their work firsthand provided a unique perspective on the corporate sector, showcasing how CSR initiatives can be strategically designed to achieve significant social good and enhance brand awareness.
Through my work with OLC, I’ve honed my ability to navigate the vast ocean of online information. I’ve developed effective strategies for identifying the most relevant details amidst the overwhelming data flow. This includes pinpointing specific topics and categories when researching especially when it comes to networking and outreach. Embracing a growth mindset has its challenges. There’s an inherent fear of missing out on potentially valuable information. My experience with OLC has empowered me to overcome this apprehension and pursue knowledge with greater confidence, focusing on what truly matters.
Enhancing Communication and Project Management Skills
Effective communication can be challenging, particularly for non-native English speakers. At first, I faced difficulties grasping the nuances of the language. The selection of words and their emotional impact can significantly influence the effectiveness of a message. While crafting outreach messages and video scripts for OLC, I dedicated myself to mastering this aspect. This experience also enhanced my project management skills. I am now adept at transforming large goals into actionable steps and adhering more closely to project timelines.
Looking Ahead
My fellowship with OLC over the past few months has been a transformative journey, prompting me to view the world through a new lens. I’m thrilled to continue serving as a fellow for the next several months, and I’m eager to tackle the ambitious goals we’ve set.
